The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and AMSA Foundation have an immediate opening for an Education and Research Director (ERD). The ERD provides day to day oversight, leadership and expertise in the ongoing development, planning, execution, monitoring and evaluation of educational programs and research activities/projects for the organization. Reporting directly to the Executive Director as a member of the Senior Management and Strategy Team (SMST), the ERD performs due diligence on new education and research initiatives, continuously evaluates and improves all aspects of programming, fosters innovation and efficiency in all educational endeavors to meet the diverse needs of physicians-in-training, promotes collaboration, and represents the national office to governance groups and a wide variety of external entities. The ERD works closely with other department directors, specifically the development and business relations department on programmatic/research grants and conference planning, as well as the publications department, and the communications and marketing department on multiple programs that offer educational opportunities and research findings to members and the public.
The primary areas of responsibility for the ERD and the department include: 1) the annual convention, up to five regional conferences per year, annual chapter officers’ conference, and leadership training(s); 2) AMSA Academy and its many institutes, scholar’s programs, study tours, and electives; 3) the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) and bilateral exchange program; 4) AMSA’s fellowship and internship program; 5) program evaluation and the organization’s research pursuits; and 6) daily departmental operations and administration, including fiscal planning/management, supervision of staff, interfacing with relevant governance groups, creating educational and training resources/materials and manuals as a department and in collaboration with other departments, and creating documents, agendas, and reports.

Requirements |

Candidates will have at least a Master’s degree in education, business, public health, health care, or a social science field; a doctoral degree is preferred. Other requirements include: significant experience working successfully with high-achieving graduate students; demonstrated abilities and a commitment to mentor and support graduate students; a good understanding and demonstrated success in program development and evaluation, various teaching methodologies, and curriculum planning; knowledge and competence in working with various learning styles and approaches, including experience in utilizing multiple delivery channels for education; specific experience planning and/or overseeing educational seminars, conventions, conferences, continuing education programs, and the like; understanding and application of scientific methodology through the design and implementation of various surveys, research projects and outcome studies using qualitative and quantitative measures; excellent project management abilities; experience with oversight and implementation of grant-funded programs and related reporting requirements; established ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively; ability to work with and nurture all levels of staff, student and governance relationships; experience in fiscal planning including creating, managing and increasing a department budget.
Preference will be given to candidates who also have 8-10 years post-graduate experience in positions of increasing responsibility in education and research setting(s), specifically including health-services and graduate education.
