Job Description
Associate Director, Publications (09-0808)

The University of Massachusetts in Worcester MA is currently recruiting for a full time Associate Director for Publications.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Relations works collaboratively on the strategic planning and staff management of the publications division which affects the official presentation of UMMS in verbal form to internal and external constituencies, through publications, collateral materials, brochures, catalogs, newsletters, and electronic media. Supervises publications division staff. Serves as editor or managing editor of award-winning periodicals and a variety of official campus publications.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: • Manages strategic planning and implementation of communications programs, conceptualizing editorial approaches and establishing institutional writing and publications standards. • Assists the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations in defining and disseminating key messages and meeting priorities of the department as they reflect the Chancellor’s objectives and UMMS’ mission. • Supervises publications division staff; assigns/tracks assignments, determines priorities, balances workloads, trains staff and evaluates performance. • Serves as member of PAP team, providing insight in support of publications, news bureau and public information strategies. • Supports/advises managers of other departments on appropriate and effective communications strategy. • As managing editor of Medical School newsletter, approves content to support institutional communications initiatives and balance institutional priorities; assures that messages are clear and appropriate; edits (always with an understanding of the impact of messages communicated). • As editor of magazine, annual report, catalogs and special publications, collaborates with Associate Vice Chancellor on planning, graphic approach, production, develops content, supervises writers, conceptualizes design approach and writes copy. • Serves as managing editor of school catalogs and provides strategy, counsel and support to deans/school administrators on communications issues. • Conceptualizes and produces other forms of communication (e.g. posters, videos, etc.). • Works with designers, printers and other vendors involved in publications production and other forms of communication. • Writes for other UMMS publications and periodicals, opinion pieces for senior administration and other writing assignments. • Supports community relations, special events and public information functions in the area of special publications. • Serves on committees as assigned. • Provides support for department’s special projects for the Chancellor’s office. • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree in English, Journalism or related field, or equivalent. 7 or more years of experience in health care public relations or related setting with responsibility for supervisory and managerial oversight, demonstrated problem solving, strategic communications, planning, writing and editing skills Demonstrated experience in managing publication production: prioritizing, content and theme development, setting and meeting deadlines, copywriting, copy editing and proofreading. Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills. Ability to analyze materials and extract key messages and to oversee delivery of key messages with an understanding of impact. Proven ability to work with senior managers and to strategize solutions to public relations problems/issues. Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and organizations skills. Basic knowledge of graphic arts, word processing skills.
