Company Overview

The State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center is the only academic medical center for health education, research, and patient care serving the 2.5 million residents of the borough of Brooklyn. The borough is estimated to be the seventh largest country in the United States, and if it were a city, it is estimated it would rank as the fourth largest city.

The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center is one of four such campuses within the 64 unit State University of New York, the largest comprehensive university system in the United States. Located on an urban campus in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, the Health Science Center includes the Colleges of Medicine, Health Related Professions, Nursing, a School of Graduate Studies, a School of Public Health, a major research center and biotechnology complex, and the University Hospital of Brooklyn. Over 1800 students pursue certificates, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctor of Public Health, Ph.D. and M.D. degrees. SUNY Downstate is the fourth largest employer and sole academic medical center in all of Brooklyn, one of the nation's largest and most ethnically diverse urban communities, and plays a vital role in the economy and quality of life of New York State and its citizens.

The University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB) operates 3 satellite health centers and several ambulatory satellite sites to serve community healthcare needs. It is the teaching hospital of SUNY Downstate Medical Center, the only academic medical center providing patient care, education, research and community service for the nearly 5 million people living in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

The Department of Pediatrics and its Children's Hospital at Downstate has over 50 full time faculty, over 100 part time and voluntary faculty, several research faculty and over 60 administrative and support staff. The Department of Pediatrics has 17 active specialty divisions and provides services in ambulatory care, community-based care, newborn nursery care, pediatric inpatient care, neonatal and pediatric intensive care. The Department has a very successful, fully accredited Pediatrics residency program with nearly 90 residents as well as nine subspecialty fellowship programs with nearly two dozen fellows. The Department's Pediatrics clerkship has approximately 24 students per months as well as students on sub-internships and a variety of subspecialty electives and ambulatory care rotations. Department faculty engage in patient care and supervision of students, residents and fellows at locations including University Hospital and community based practice sites.

Company History

The history of the institution spans over 150 years, during which time it has undergone several name changes. In 1856 two physicians established a dispensary in downtown Brooklyn to provide care for poor immigrants. The Long Island College Hospital grew out of this dispensary. In 1858 the state granted the hospital’shospital’s request for a charter to launch a medical school. The school, which opened its doors two years later, revolutionized medical education in the United States. The new school was unique because, for the first time in this country, the teaching of medicine was brought to the hospital bedside and the idea that physicians should be trained exclusively in university classrooms and lecture halls was rejected. It was truly a college hospital.

The Center is heir to a tradition that began more than a century ago, with the founding in 1860 of the Long Island College Hospital — this country's first teaching hospital and the prototype for all subsequent medical centers. SUNY Downstate Medical Center has a three-fold mandate: education to train physicians, nurses, research scientists and allied health professionals; research in the medical sciences; and the provision of clinical care to the population of New York State.

This complex organization serves the needs of a larger and more diverse urban constituency than any other such center in the country. It upholds a special responsibility to solve difficult problems found primarily in urban areas, and to serve those who are underserved.
