- Chief Academic Officer
Description

The Chief Academic Officer of the American Medical Association is poised to play a defining role in shaping the future of medical education at a moment of profound transformation. This leader will guide how education must evolve in the context of digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and an intensifying physician shortage, bringing bold, forward-looking thinking unconstrained by traditional structures or legacy models. Working shoulder-to-shoulder with AMA leadership on strategy, mission, and vision, the CAO will envision what the profession will require next and build the teams, partnerships, and research agenda necessary to deliver it.
Founded in 1847, the American Medical Association (AMA) is the largest and only national association that convenes 190+ state and specialty medical societies and other critical stakeholders. Throughout its history, the AMA has always followed its mission: to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.
As physicians' powerful ally in patient care, the AMA delivers on this mission by representing physicians with a unified voice in courts and legislative bodies across the nation, removing obstacles that interfere with patient care, leading the charge to prevent chronic disease and confront public health crises, and driving the future of medicine to tackle the biggest challenges in health care and training the leaders of tomorrow. The CAO position requires a nationally trusted voice who can navigate complex political and regulatory pressures ranging from challenges to accreditation, curriculum, and funding while advancing precision education, lifelong learning, and enterprise-wide collaboration across digital health, AI, and education platforms to ensure the AMA remains indispensable to physicians and learners at every stage of their careers.
The AMA seeks a strong, visionary leader who has already established a national reputation and is now ready to take their impact to the next level by expanding influence, shaping the future of medical education, and representing the organization with authority and distinction. This individual will have served in a senior leadership role within an academic medical center, health system, professional association, or foundation, with experience guiding strategy, people, and complex initiatives in academic medicine or medical education. The ideal candidate will hold an MD or equivalent clinical degree with board certification and bring the professional credibility necessary to lead at the national level.
