Position SummaryThe Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery within the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and UVA Health will lead and shape the future of vascular and endovascular surgery across one of the nation's leading integrated academic health systems.
This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of vascular surgery across an expanding academic health system while partnering with institutional leaders to advance clinical excellence, innovation, education, and research throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Division Chief will play a key leadership role within the UVA Health Heart and Vascular Institute, partnering with leaders across cardiovascular medicine, cardiac surgery, vascular medicine, radiology, and other disciplines to advance an integrated strategy for cardiovascular care, research, and innovation.
They will inherit a strong clinical and academic foundation and have the opportunity to build a truly integrated, statewide vascular program serving patients throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. With continued institutional investment in HVI, expansion across UVA Community Health, and the launch of a new Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency, the Division Chief will lead the next phase of growth across the academic medical center and regional network.
Currently, the Division has a vibrant academic portfolio spanning investigator-initiated clinical trials, translational vascular biology, outcomes and health services research, device innovation, and multidisciplinary collaborations across the University, which this leader will further expand to establish UVA Health as a destination vascular program throughout the Commonwealth.
Ultimately, the Division Chief will be a major institutional leader, one who is passionate about the mission, vision, and values of the Division, Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, and UVA Health, and one who will foster a culture of collaboration, professionalism, innovation, and accountability while advancing excellence in patient care, education, research, and faculty development.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to recruit outstanding faculty, expand multidisciplinary clinical programs, develop future academic leaders, and help define the next generation of vascular surgery at UVA Health.
Key Responsibilities
The Division Chief will provide strategic, clinical, academic, and cultural leadership for the Division while partnering with the Department of Surgery, HVI, and UVA Community Health to advance an integrated vision for vascular care across the Health System and define the future of vascular surgery at UVA Health.
Responsibilities of the Division Chief include, but are not limited to the following:
• Develop and execute a strategic vision for vascular and endovascular surgery that advances UVA Health's missions of patient care, education, research, and community engagement.
• Lead a diverse academic faculty while recruiting, mentoring, developing, and retaining outstanding surgeons, physician-scientists, advanced practice providers, trainees, and staff.
• Partner closely with leaders across the Department of Surgery, the Heart and Vascular Institute, UVA Community Health, and other clinical service lines to advance an integrated vision for vascular care across UVA Health.
• Continue the growth of complex open and endovascular clinical programs while ensuring exceptional patient outcomes, operational excellence, access, and responsible stewardship of resources.
• Expand nationally recognized programs in translational science, investigator-initiated clinical trials, outcomes research, device innovation, and multidisciplinary vascular research while fostering the development of surgeon-scientists and clinician investigators.
• Strengthen multidisciplinary collaborations with Vascular Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Nephrology, Wound Care, and other specialties to develop comprehensive vascular programs.
• Lead and expand educational programs, including the newly established Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency, the Vascular Surgery Fellowship, the General Surgery Residency, and medical student education.
• Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement while developing future surgical leaders.
• Represent the Division, Department of Surgery, and UVA Health nationally through professional societies, research collaborations, educational initiatives, and strategic partnerships.
The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative leadership team committed to advancing the clinical, educational, and research missions of the Department of Surgery, Heart and Vascular Institute, School of Medicine, and UVA Health.
