The Department of Neurology is seeking a dynamic leader to join our expanding clinical and research enterprises in the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine. This position will also serve as the Division Chief for the Division of Neuromuscular Medicine. This position will provide patient care, engage in medical student and neurology resident and fellow education, participate in clinical research, and direct a robust and growing program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Administrative: Responsible for providing leadership within the division for all clinical, educational, and research missions along with the day-to-day management of division operations, staffing, budget, and division programs. This includes working with Department of Neurology administration to promote the mission, vision, and goals of the division and department.
Teaching: In addition to overseeing the teaching activities of the division as a whole, the Division Chief will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, housestaff, and other healthcare professionals. They will be expected to organize and develop a series of formal conferences for the housestaff and students emphasizing issues in neuromuscular diseases. They will attend weekly Grand Rounds and lecture upon occasion as requested. In addition, the Chief will be expected to play a primary role in the mentoring of faculty in advancing their academic careers.
Research: The Division of Neuromuscular Medicine is engaged in clinical and translational research projects. The faculty member will be expected to participate in, and when appropriate lead, clinical research and clinical trials. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in the Department of Neurology. The Division Chief encourages junior faculty, fellows, and residents to participate in many ongoing basic, clinical, and educational research projects.
Service: The Division Chief will serve on departmental, School of Medicine, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g. reviewer, conference organizer, etc.
Clinical: Primary clinical responsibilities include care of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings with an emphasis on neuromuscular diseases.
Qualifications:
Required:
- MD or MD/PhD degree (or equivalent)
- BC/BE in Neurology
- Fellowship training in Neuromuscular Diseases
- Must have more than three years of experience following fellowship completion
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred:
- Strong history of basic, translational, and/or clinical research demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and extramural grant funding
- Nationally recognized leader in the field of neuromuscular disease research and/or clinical practice
- Demonstrated track record of active participation in multidisciplinary clinical programs focused on patient-centered care
- Ability to thrive and lead in a growing, complex, and matrixed environment
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build consensus and cooperation among various stakeholders
- Passion for Neurology (Neuromuscular) program development and research
- A team builder who can mentor and direct others in research initiatives
